Thabo Mbeki Informal Settlement Fire
Disaster strikes when we least expect it, and it's in these moments that we come together to uplift and support those affected. The Thabo Mbeki informal settlement recently faced a significant setback, with 13 people severely affected.
Cato Crest Flood Response
The recent flood rains had a devastating impact on communities across the PINK region of KZN - Phoenix, Inanda, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu, and surrounding areas. In Cato Crest alone, 463 individuals were affected by this tragedy. CityHope Disaster Relief took action to bring immediate assistance. Last Saturday, we distributed food and hygiene parcels to each affected household in Cato Crest, providing essential support during that challenging time.
Dakota Beach Isipingo
In a devastating incident, over 300 shacks had gone up in flames at an informal settlement in Isipingo.
The Dakota informal settlement, located just a few hundred meters from the beach, had been severely affected by the blaze.
Gumtree Fire Response
In January 2023, approximately 72 individuals were left destitute after a fire ripped through their informal settlement in Gumtree, Durban.
Palmiet Fire Reponse
In January 2023, approximately 800 individuals were left destitute after a fire ripped through their informal settlement in Palmiet Durban.
Richmond Flood Response
In February 2023, 84 Richmond families' lives were turned upside down when their homes were flooded.
Madagascar Cyclone & Flood Response
Cyclone Cheneso hit Madagascar on the northern coast from January 19th to the 23rd, causing devastating damage to infrastructure such as houses and schools. The strong winds and heavy rainfall disrupted transportation by cutting off several national roads, making it difficult for people to get around. Tragically, the storm resulted in at least 138 fatalities and the destruction of hundreds of homes. Approximately 130,000 people have been displaced as a result.
Masiphumelele Informal Settlement Response
In October 2022, a fire ripped through Masiphumelele Informal Settlement in Cape Town. The fire left approximately 400 individuals destitute, without belongings or shelter.
Pietermaritzburg Flood Response
Earlier this month, the banks of the Msunduzi River in Pietermartizburg burst after heavy rainfall in the area, flooding many people's homes in various Pietermaritzburg communities.
Somalia Famine & Drought Response
After a gradual recovery from the food insecurity and famine of 2011, Somalia’s food security is once again under threat. The situation is becoming dire in rural areas due to many seasons of too little rain and low river water levels.
Makausi Informal Settlement, Fire Response
On Saturday, 22 October, a fire destroyed the homes of 7 individuals at Makausi informal settlement in Germiston. The people, including a 6-month-old baby boy, were left without shelter and belongings.
Crown Informal Settlement Fire Response
On Wednesday, 6 October, approximately 40 individuals were left stranded without food, clothing or any other belongings after a fire caused by an electrical fault destroyed their homes at the Crown flats settlement in Kenvillle, Durban.
Londonderry Informal Settlement Fire Response
On Monday, 3 October, 200 shacks were destroyed as fire ripped through Londonderry Informal Settlement in Durban. It is assumed that a stove, left unattended, was the cause of the fire. The fire left approximately 1000 individuals destitute, without belongings or shelter.
KZN Floods
Between the 11th and 14th of April 2022, the KZN province of South Africa experienced extremely heavy rainfall which caused dangerous flooding and landslides
Masinenge Informal Settlement Fire Response
A fire ripped through the Masinenge Informal Settlement outside Margate on Monday, 13 June 2022, destroying the homes of 270 families before being brought under control.
