HOPE AFTER THE FIRE

CityHope Rallies to Support 600 Dunoon Families – JANUARY 2026

In January 2026, a devastating fire tore through parts of the Dunoon community, destroying homes and leaving many families without essential belongings. In response, CityHope Disaster Relief mobilised to provide emergency support to those affected.

CityHope initially responded in February, distributing food parcels to families who had lost everything in the fire. Recognising that recovery requires more than immediate relief, CityHope returned to the community again on Saturday, 7 March 2026, to provide additional support to families still rebuilding their lives.

ABOUT DUNOON

📍 City: Cape Town

📍 Province: Western Cape

📍 Area: Milnerton / Table View region

🏠 Type of community: Informal settlement/township

👥 Population:

Tens of thousands of residents, many living in informal structures

Unfortunately, areas like Dunoon are highly vulnerable to fires because homes are often built close together with flammable materials, which allows fires to spread rapidly.

How We Responded

When disaster strikes, recovery rarely happens in a single moment—it happens in stages, through partnerships, persistence, and people who care.
After a devastating fire tore through the Dunoon community earlier this year, CityHope Disaster Relief returned in March to continue supporting families who lost almost everything. Working alongside The City of Cape Town, The Red Cross, and The Methodist Church, we distributed relief aid to 600 families affected by the disaster.
Each family received practical items to help them begin rebuilding daily life, including:
• Food and hygiene parcels
• Baby hampers
• Stationery packs for children
• Household essentials such as a wash basin, broom and mop
• Two-plate stoves for cooking

This was our second response to Dunoon, after an earlier distribution of food parcels in February. Returning with additional supplies meant families could take another step toward stability and dignity.
Disaster relief is never just about supplies—it’s about restoring hope in the middle of loss.

Thank you to every partner, volunteer, and supporter who made this response possible. Because of you, 600 families were reminded that they are not alone.
