Eastern Cape Flood Crisis – June 2025

On Tuesday, 10 June 2025, the Eastern Cape was devastated by flooding triggered by a powerful cold front. Torrential rain, high winds, and snow led to rivers rising by up to 4 metres, sweeping away homes, infrastructure, and tragically, taking lives.

Following the severe flooding that struck Mthatha and surrounding areas, CityHope Disaster Relief, together with our partners, spent two months on the ground (July–August 2025), reaching more than 1,300 families – over 5,000 individuals.

Our relief efforts included the distribution of food parcels, WASH kits, blankets, and household essentials. We also supported seven displacement centres by providing gas stoves, urns, large cooking pots, water tanks, and food supplies to assist with daily needs. Recognising the needs of vulnerable groups, we supplied 200 infants with mattresses and blankets and extended assistance to an elderly care centre by providing food, wheelchairs, walkers, stress balls, a gas stove, pots, and a fridge.

This response went beyond the delivery of aid — it was about listening, standing with families in their struggles, and ensuring those in crisis knew they were not alone. Through the Start Network and our dedicated partners – Oxfam South Africa, ActionAid South Africa, Ubuntu Restoration, Farmers Network South Africa, and Masimanyane Rural Women – we have brought relief, resilience, and renewed hope to the people of Mthatha.

On Tuesday, 10 June 2025, the Eastern Cape was devastated by flooding triggered by a powerful cold front. Torrential rain, high winds, and snow led to rivers rising by up to 4 metres, sweeping away homes, infrastructure, and tragically, taking lives.

The impact:

  • 90 confirmed deaths – including 30 children
  • Thousands displaced
  • Entire rural communities submerged
  • Widespread power outages and destruction

CityHope Disaster Relief has already responded by sending an 8-ton truck of essential aid—including blankets, mattresses, food, and hygiene supplies—to those sheltering in community halls. But the need is far greater than what we’ve delivered so far.
