Marikana Fire Response

On 25 May 2025, a devastating fire swept through the Marikana informal settlement in Philippi East, Cape Town, destroying nine structures and displacing 25 individuals. In the aftermath, families were left without shelter, essentials, or a sense of stability.

25 INDIVIDUALS Assisted

In response, CityHope Disaster Relief, in partnership with Beautiful Gate South Africa, stepped in to offer support and restore dignity to those affected. On 30 May, representatives from each of the nine affected households were invited to Beautiful Gate, where they received:

  • Relief Buckets (Hope Kits) containing essential food and hygiene items
  • Counselling support provided by Beautiful Gate social workers
  • Access to further community care and assistance

This collaborative response aimed to not only address immediate physical needs but also offer emotional and psychological support during a time of great uncertainty.

We are deeply grateful to Beautiful Gate for their hands-on coordination and to every donor and partner who helps us respond swiftly when disaster strikes. Together, we continue to stand with communities like Marikana as they begin to rebuild their lives.
