On 15 April 2025, a fire tore through the Silahwe Nkanini informal settlement in Lwandle, Strand, Western Cape, displacing approximately 681 people and affecting 200 households. The blaze started in a home while residents were away and quickly spread, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

CityHope Disaster Relief responded to the crisis by supplying 200 Hope Kits (food buckets) to those affected. The distribution was facilitated by Beautiful Gate South Africa and managed on-site by local leaders and volunteers who coordinated logistics and ensured that the aid reached the right households.

Thanks to a well-organised effort and the invaluable support of the community, 90% of the Hope Kits were distributed during the first phase. The remaining 10% were delivered shortly after to ensure no one was left behind.

The response in Lwandle was a powerful display of compassion and community solidarity. Alongside other organisations providing meals, clothing, and essential supplies, CityHope Disaster Relief’s Hope Kits—each containing food, hygiene and other household items—help meet the immediate needs of affected families. These kits offered not just practical support, but a sense of dignity and care during an incredibly difficult time.

We remain committed to standing with this community as they recover and rebuild, and we are grateful to every donor and partner who helps make responses like this possible. Together, we bring hope.
