Eastern Cape Storm Response

CityHope Disaster Relief has been on the ground in the Eastern Cape, responding to the devastating impact of recent storms that swept across several communities. In partnership with the Alfred Nzo District Disaster Management, local councillors, and community leaders, we’ve reached three of the most affected areas—Umzimvubu, Ntabankulu, Matatiele, and Bizana—providing essential relief to hundreds in need.

On 7 March 2025, the South African Weather Service issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in the northern and western interior of the Eastern Cape. These storms resulted in localised flooding of settlements, roads and bridges, causing damage to property and disrupting daily life in the affected areas.

Later in the month, on 23 March 2025, another severe thunderstorm warning was issued for various parts of the Eastern Cape, including the Amathole, Chris Hani and Alfred Nzo Districts. These storms led to further localised flooding, exacerbating the challenges faced by communities still recovering from earlier incidents.

CityHope partnered with Local Disaster Management teams across three districts in the Eastern Cape to ensure that most of the affected regions were reached. We were able to support 1,075 families across 17 different communities over the duration of the project.

CityHope is profoundly thankful for the opportunity to serve these communities during such a crucial time. The assistance provided brought genuine relief and comfort to the beneficiaries, many of whom shared their deep gratitude for the support they received. These moments allowed CityHope not only to address urgent needs, but also to uplift and inspire hope among those affected.
