Blackburn fire leaves 120 people with nothing
Just after midday on 24 August 2026, fire tore through the Blackburn settlement north of Durban. By the time it was brought under control, an estimated 65 homes were gone and around 120 people had lost everything they owned.
Not damaged. Gone.
The families who lived there did not lose furniture and appliances. They lost the blankets they sleep under, the pots they cook in, the school uniforms hanging up for Monday morning, the ID documents kept safe in a tin under the bed. In the space of an hour, an entire community was left without shelter and without a single basic necessity.

Our team travelled to Blackburn to see the situation for ourselves. That is how we work. Before we move a single item of aid, we walk the site, we speak to the people affected, and we sit with community leaders to understand what is actually needed rather than what we assume is needed.
Families are sheltering wherever they can. Children are without warm clothing in the middle of a KwaZulu-Natal winter. Parents are trying to work out how to replace the documents they need in order to access any help at all.
What we can tell you is this: the community is not standing alone. We are connecting with local leadership and partners on the ground to coordinate a response that gets the right aid to the right families, quickly and without duplication.

What is needed right now
The immediate priorities for the 120 people affected are straightforward and urgent:
- Emergency shelter material and bedding
- Blankets and warm clothing
- Food parcels and clean drinking water
- Hygiene packs, especially for women and infants
- Cooking and eating utensils
- Support with replacing lost identity documents
Why speed matters
The first 72 hours after a fire decide a great deal. Whether a child sleeps warm. Whether a family stays together. Whether people are able to hold onto some dignity while they work out what comes next.
