Tranche Two: Bringing Relief, Dignity and Hope

One hundred families were invited to the distribution in Kwall Community. More than three hundred people came.

That single moment says more about the situation in Plateau and Kaduna States than any statistic could. Families who had lost homes, livelihoods and safety walked to a distribution point on the strength of news that help had arrived — and hoped there would be something left for them.

Through the second tranche of our humanitarian intervention, CityHope Disaster Relief and our partner WAVE South Africa have continued to reach vulnerable families affected by violence, displacement and food insecurity across communities in Plateau and Kaduna States, Nigeria.

Relief distributions provided essential food assistance to households facing devastating circumstances, including the loss of homes and livelihoods, forced displacement and prolonged food insecurity.

Kwall Community, Plateau State

One hundred vulnerable households received a 25kg bag of rice and two litres of vegetable oil — food to keep meals on the table while families work out what comes next. Every household on that list had been affected by the ongoing crisis.

The field report notes plainly that the need was far greater than anticipated. More than 300 people arrived for a distribution planned for 100 beneficiaries.

Chikun and Kajuru, Kaduna State

In the Chikun and Kajuru Local Government Areas, another 100 vulnerable households received the same essential food package.

Those households included:

• Internally displaced people
• Widows and female-headed households
• Older people
• People living with disabilities
• Families experiencing severe food insecurity

These are the households that are hardest to reach, and usually reached last.

More Than Food

Two hundred households across two states. Rice and oil, carried home by people who had recently lost almost everything else.

But the response has been more than the distribution of food. For families walking through unimaginable hardship, being counted, named and served with care is its own kind of relief.

It has been a tangible expression of compassion, dignity and hope to families walking through unimaginable hardship.

The Need Remains Immense

We do not want to overstate what has been done. Two hundred food parcels in a region facing displacement on this scale is a beginning, not a conclusion. The people who arrived in Kwall without an invitation are still there.
