Fire in Jeppestown

Jeppestown, Johannesburg | 24th of February 2020

On the 24th of February 2020, we were notified by a teacher at one of our Pebbles nursery schools of a fire that had destroyed people’s shacks near her house in Jeppestown. Although this plea for help had not come through the disaster management, we thought it would be a necessary distribution to make as it is only 10mins walk from the Cornerstone Church Maboneng site.

How we helped

On the 24th of February 2020, we were notified by a teacher at one of our Pebbles nursery schools of a fire that had destroyed people’s shacks near her house in Jeppestown. Although this plea for help had not come through the disaster management, we thought it would be a necessary distribution to make as it is only 10mins walk from the Cornerstone Church Maboneng site. This is one of the first disasters that has taken place so close to the church site where we can feed people back into our local church and help them a lot more than just distributing a hope kit to them.
Team leader Gabriela Stewart and around 19 volunteers coordinated a response outreach on the 29th of February 2020. We took 25 hope kits to assist the 29 victims and their families. We arrived at the Cornerstone Church Maboneng site at 8am and prayed and briefed everyone. There were a lot of volunteers because we wanted a lot of people from the local church to be present so that the outreach could be continuous, and over 9 people showed up from that site, including one of the elders.
We then went to the disaster location where we prayed and ministered to the victims, while we distributed the hope kits. The victims received the message and prayers so well, and we had at least one young man who attended the church service on Sunday Morning.
The local church is already organizing to go through sometime soon to the victims and sing worship and pray over them again. They are also in the process of trying to organise a soup kitchen for them.
