After The Fire: Emergency Relief For Burnwood Families
A fire swept through the Burnwood informal settlement in inner-west Durban, leaving families with almost nothing — including children who watched their world change in a single afternoon. This is how the community was met with help, and with hope.
Burnwood, Durban
The Burnwood informal settlement sits in the inner-west of Durban, set among densely built homes near Sherwood, Palmiet and Springfield Park. The map below marks the fire-affected area.
A Community Left With Almost Nothing
When fire swept through the Burnwood settlement, 56 people were left trying to piece together what remained — including 7 children who watched their world change in a single afternoon. Homes and structures were damaged, and families were displaced in a matter of hours.
For the families affected, the fire took more than shelter. Household belongings, essentials and the everyday items that hold a home together were lost — leaving young children and their parents to face recovery from almost nothing.
Days later, CityHope Disaster Relief arrived with more than supplies, responding directly to bring relief to the families affected by the fire and reaching the households that needed it most.
Informal settlements like Burnwood are especially vulnerable to fire. Closely spaced structures and flammable building materials allow flames to spread quickly between homes — which is why a fast, coordinated relief response matters so much.
When A Home Is Lost, So Is Everything Inside It
Families affected by the Burnwood fire were left without the essentials most of us take for granted. Relief efforts were shaped around what people had actually lost:
