Alexandra Fire Disaster

On 6th December 2018, a fire incident was reported in the early hours of the morning in Alexandra Informal Settlement. Alexandra is located in Gauteng, off the London Road exit. CityHope’s General Manager, Catherine Smith, was notified and activated to undertake an assessment and coordinate a response. On 10th December 2018 Lauren Weeks, from Cornerstone Church Bedfordview, rallied together a team of volunteers along with the 250 Hope Kits in stock in JHB and met with the community leader at the Alexandra Police Station to facilitate the distribution of relief aid to the registered victims of the devastating fire.

Disaster Management Assessment

The initial assessment of the damage due to the disaster showed over 200 shacks were completely burnt and destroyed, affecting over 300 victims. There were thankfully no fatalities.

How we helped

Team leader, Lauren Weeks, and volunteers coordinated a response outreach on 10th & 11th December 2018. CityHope provided 250 hope kits to assist the victims and their families. The team arrived on site at Alexandra Informal settlement and conducted prayers and outreach to those affected. Lauren and the team prayed with, and for the victims, as well as ministered to the families. The victims and families received the message and prayers well and were very moved by the love shown to them. We only hope this brings the families closer to God.

Team leader Christine Williams and the MyDunoon volunteers coordinated a response outreach on 26th March 2018. CityHope provided 200 hope kits to assist the fire victims and their families.

How many people benefited from the aid?

Approximately 300 victims and their families were identified and recorded. Their needs are great.
