Hout Bay Fire Disaster

Hout Bay, Western Cape | Friday, 19 October 2018

Two people died and two others were injured in a fire that spread through the shacks in the Hout Bay settlement in the early hours of Friday 19th October 2018. The fire began in Salamander Road in the Hangberg Improvement Development Area. It took firefighters just over 5 hours to bring the fire under control.
CityHope Disaster Relief partnered with CBN Africa, based in Cape Town, in responding to the disaster. Ian Walton, CBN Regional Director, pulled a team of volunteers together who collected the relief aid from Dunoon and transferred it to the Hangberg Civic Centre. The CBN team worked alongside Councilor Rob Quintas in distributing the relief aid to the registered beneficiaries.

The City of Cape Town confirmed that 30 wood and iron structures were destroyed by fire, leaving 90 people displaced.

There were two fatalities.

How we helped

The CBN team were able to distribute 48 Hope Kits to the beneficiaries who had lost all their belongings in the fire devastation.

How many people benefited from the aid?

There were 90 individuals who were displaced and according to the local Councilor, Rob Quintas, 38 of those affected were under the age of 18 years.
