Edith Benson Children's Home - March 2018

Sherwood, Durban | March 2018
In March 2018, the famous Edith Benson Children’s Home in Sherwood, Durban caught fire causing major damage and destruction to a central part of the home. Gratefully, the children and those who care for them escaped harm despite the deathly blaze.
Dozens of small babies and children were relocated to other children’s homes and a national campaign began to restore the home and make provision for the children once more.

How we helped

CityHope’s volunteers attended sorting sessions and assisted the carers by packing boxes; sorting through nappy and baby donations. The work was plentiful and streams of goods poured into the warehouse throughout the week.
In addition to the outreach, we were able to provide supplies of baby goods including items donated to us by PEP Stores and Mr Price as well as donated goods from the public.
We also received a cash donation of R20,000 from Metier SA which has been put towards the installation of a new jungle gym at the home in August 2018. We are excited to be a part of the rebuild and to bring a measure of joy to these precious little people again!
