Our general manager received a call from a community member within a small informal settlement known as “Slovo” near Carletonville in Gauteng. The lady named “Tabitha” was distraught following a fire which took place in her home village destroying nearly 100 shacks and leaving the families who were affected without anything to eat, wear or sleep on.
Despite having made appeals to local government and other disaster relief organisations, Tabitha pleaded for assistance. Fortunately for us, Tabitha is a tech-savvy young lady and within a short space of time, she sent through photographs showing us the devastation that had been caused as a result of an accidental fire started by a paraffin stove.
We immediately called out to Duan van Schalkwyk of LRC Church based in Linbro Park who was more than willing to get involved. He quickly rallied troops of volunteers who were happy to assist the community. Along with the help from City Logistics we were lucky enough to send 100 kits from our Durban based storage facility to the families in Slovo who needed urgent relief aid and comfort within a very short space of time.
Shortly after the outreach, we received a beautiful message from Tabitha which reads: “Good evening – What a great day we had with Duan and the team. Thank you so much for everything and may the Lord continue to show off in your life. The community of Slovo have been blessed with packages and I am grateful. Thank you, Tabitha.”
